Dental whitening is an aesthetic procedure widely sought by patients seeking to improve the appearance of their teeth by treating darkening and discoloration. This study aimed to report the different whitening techniques, such as supervised home whitening and in-office whitening, highlighting their indications, results and effects on tooth sensitivity. Tooth sensitivity, one of the most common side effects, occurs due to the use of peroxides in high concentrations, which, when penetrating the dentinal tubules, cause pain and discomfort. Methods to minimize this sensitivity are described, including the use of desensitizing agents, such as potassium nitrate, fluorides and hydroxyapatite. An integrative bibliographic review was carried out and a search was established in the SciELO, PubMed and manual search databases, using documents published in the last eleven years as search criteria, with the exception of four articles from 2008, 2011, 2012 and 2013. It was concluded that in-office whitening, although effective and faster, tends to generate greater sensitivity, while supervised home whitening presents a lower rate of discomfort.
