Development and validation of a behavioral tracking scale for students' speech-language health

Introduction: The instrument scientifically validated by this study is entitled Behavioral Tracking Scale for Students’ Speech-Language Health, whose development was guided by psychometrics, becoming a tool with great potential to influence human health valuation regarding the potential impairment in speech-language health of students aged between 6 and 18 years. This self-explanatory instrument can be used by elementary school teachers in grades 1 to 9. Objective: To develop and scientifically validate an effective, intelligible, objective, and easy-to-understand behavioral tracking scale that elementary school teachers can use in order to identify possible speech-language impairments in their students. Method: This is a descriptive, cross-sectional, and developmental research of the validation type, developed from a quali‑quantitative approach. Results: Aiming to achieve instrumental validation, essential steps were taken, namely: the establishment of the conceptual framework; definition of the instrument objectives and target population; construction of questions (items) and response scales; selection and organization of questions (items); instrument structuring; content validity; pre-test (Test); test (Retest). As for the statistical validity process, specific statistical methods were used for each psychometric property assessed, such as: internal consistency; convergent validity; reliability degree; discriminant validity; and external validity of the construct. Conclusion: With the completion of this study, the Behavioral Tracking Scale for Students’ Speech-Language Health becomes a scientifically valid instrument.
