Abstract

Introduction: Helicobacter pylori is a gram-negative bacterium that uses several mechanisms to establish itself and remain in the gastric mucosa. It is estimated that approximately 48.6% of the world's adult population is affected by the infection, with developing countries being the most affected. In addition to the direct effects of the bacteria on the stomach, the infection can disturb the balance of the intestinal microbiome, contributing to the development of a series of gastrointestinal disorders. Therefore, it is important to highlight that the intestinal microbiome is responsible for functions related to maintaining the body's homeostatic balance. Objectives: To explore the interaction between the intestinal microbiome and H. pylori and to understand the therapeutic implications in gastritis. Methodology: This is a narrative review of the scientific literature through the selection of studies in bibliographic databases between 2014 and 2024. Results and Discussion: It is observed that the intestinal microbiome undergoes changes due to H. pylori infection and the use of antibiotics used in the treatment of this condition. This dysbiosis contributes to the emergence of several gastrointestinal disorders. Therefore, the use of probiotics as an adjuvant treatment has shown great potential, however, its isolated use cannot completely eradicate the bacteria from the gastric mucosa. Conclusion: H. pylori-induced gastritis is recognized as a public health issue on a global scale. In addition to its role in the pathogenicity of gastritis, the impact of the intestinal microbiome on this process has been established. Thus, understanding the interaction between H. pylori and the microbiome is essential to develop effective therapeutic approaches.
